Washington D.C.—Congressman Eliot Engel and more than 150 of his Democratic colleagues sent a letter to the Republican Chairmen of the Committee on Ways and Means and Senate Committee on Finance asking that they use their existing authority to request President Trump’s tax returns.
“Following Russian tampering in last November’s election, the resignation of his National Security Adviser for lying about his dealings with the Russian ambassador, and now reports that his Attorney General made false statements to the Senate while under oath while meeting in secret with Russian officials, it has become an urgent matter of national security that we understand the scope of the President’s overseas business connections and his ties to Russia,” Engel said. “A first step toward learning that is through the release of his tax returns.”
Engel continued, “We now have a sitting President who has broken with more than 40 years of tradition by not releasing his tax returns. The American people deserve to know whether the President is using the power of his office to American interests, foreign interests, or his own business interests. I call upon both chairmen to exercise their power under Section 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code to obtain President Trump’s tax returns and reveal them to the public.”
