WASHINGTON D.C.—Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a top member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement on Senate Republicans' latest iteration of Trumpcare, known as "Graham-Cassidy" for the bill's sponsors, Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA):
"In less than two weeks, funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and community health centers will expire. But rather than focus on a plan to keep children healthy and health centers open, Republicans are again wasting precious legislative days on yet another rushed, dangerous, and ineffective Trumpcare bill.
"The Graham-Cassidy plan would dramatically cut federal health care funding and decimate Medicaid. New York alone would lose $33 billion in the next decade. What's more, the bill guts protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions and allows insurers to once again sell skimpy plans that exclude essential health benefits, like prescription drugs and preventive care.
"Just like its predecessors, this new take on Trumpcare would force Americans to pay more and get less. Its effects are the same - and we will do everything possible to ensure it suffers the same fate."
