Engel Statement on Special Counsel Appointment

May 17, 2017

WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, this evening made the following statement:

“Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein did the right thing by appointing a special counsel to investigate the Trump-Russia Scandal, and I hope Mr. Mueller is quick to demonstrate his independence from the Trump Administration.  I look forward to him getting to work and getting long overdue answers for the American people.

“The special counsel’s work must be complemented by an independent commission. We need an empowered panel that can hold hearings and demand answers in the public eye. House leadership should remove the roadblocks and help to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act to establish that commission.”
