Washington, D.C.—Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a member of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, today made the following statement:
“Forty-five years ago today, the Supreme Court affirmed that women have a constitutional right to make their own decisions about their health and bodies. Though it’s been nearly half a century since Roe v. Wade, our defense of the right to choose is more important now than ever before.
“For years, Republicans in Congress have incessantly attacked women’s autonomy and reproductive rights. Those attacks have reached a new crescendo, though, under this Administration. In the past year alone, this Administration has sought to make it harder for women to get birth control, restrict access to health care providers, and even make it more difficult for survivors of rape or incest to access safe abortion.
“As a long-time member of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, I am outraged by the actions of this Administration and Congressional Republicans. I have said it before, and I’ll say it again: Members of Congress and the President should not be deciding what is best for a woman’s health. As policymakers, we should work to ensure that all Americans can access comprehensive, affordable care when they need it, and that each one of us is afforded dignity when making personal health care decisions.
“On this anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I commit to keep fighting the dangerous, anti-woman policies that this Administration has championed. We will not go back.”
