Adding to a wide array of support from organized labor, Congressman Eliot Engel added two major endorsements today from labor unions representing New York’s first responders: Uniformed Firefighters Association of the FDNY and Local 2507 Uniformed EMTs, Paramedics, and Fire Inspectors.
The unions recognized Congressman Engel’s tenacious fight to win needed resources during the pandemic, and his years-long battle for compensation for those who served New York so bravely during 9/11.
“Eliot Engel has always stood by our members who put their lives on the line every day to protect New Yorkers,” said UFA President Gerard Fitzgerald. “During this pandemic, when others were posing for photo opps, Eliot stayed on the job in Washington, fighting for Federal money for New York, and protection for front line workers. That’s what Eliot does. After the Attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11 – when 343 firefighters were murdered and hundreds more faced sickness and uncertainty – Eliot Engel was by our side fighting like hell for years, to win permanent reauthorization of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. Eliot Engel is and has always been dependable.”
“Eliot Engel has always shown unwavering support for our members in uniform, dedication to the safety of all the hardworking men and women in New York, and a history of taking on the tough political battles to get New Yorkers the support they deserve,” said Local 2507 President Oren Barzilay. “Long after 9/11 he was a tenacious fighter, helping to pass the Zadroga Act. And when this pandemic hit, he battled for more PPE for frontline workers, more funds for hospitals and community health centers, more testing. He’s a man we count on in difficult times.”
