NEW YORK – Praising his record on reproductive health and climate change – and his long partnership on progressive causes – Congresswoman Nita Lowey has endorsed Congressman Eliot Engel for reelection to Congress.
The endorsement adds to the growing roster of major progressive Democrat legislators who have endorsed Congressman Engel, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic Whip James Clyburn, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Chairwoman Maxine Waters, Chairman Adam Schiff, and the Congressional Black Caucus.
“Eliot is an unwavering leader on the progressive priorities we all share,” said Congresswoman Lowey. “As Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, he took a leading role in the impeachment of President Trump and works to ensure U.S. security and effective global engagement. As a member of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, he has secured vital relief for New York in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. He is a stalwart fighter for the Affordable Care Act, reproductive rights, combating climate change, and health care for all, and takes a strong stand against hate in all its forms.
“At this pivotal time, New York demands strong representation in Washington to combat the division and hate that Donald Trump perpetuates. We need a true fighting progressive with experience and a deep commitment to helping our communities — that’s Eliot Engel.”
“Nita is my dear friend and my partner in Democratic House leadership, but she’s also truly a trailblazer in New York and beyond,” said Congressman Engel. “I’m honored to have her endorsement. And while I will dearly miss her in Congress next year, I know we’ll join hands to celebrate beating Trump and returning the Administration to strong, progressive leadership.”
Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) is seeking re-election in the 16th District of New York, including the north Bronx and southern Westchester. The son of an ironworker and a homemaker, born in the Bronx and raised in public housing, Rep. Engel is a major progressive Democratic leader who chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee and has fought for the rights of women, organized labor, immigrants, our minority communities, and LGBTQ Americans for three decades.
