The Trump administration used “faulty reasoning” in denying federal funds for a long-awaited flood mitigation project in Mamaroneck, given that two people have died as a result of local floods, insist U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel.
The three Democrats said that they reject the feds’ evaluation of the project based on an unknown “benefit-cost ratio,” and that they “vehemently stress that the past loss of life and distressing flooding in the study area should be the foremost concern.”
They released a letter Wednesday to R.D. James, the assistant secretary to the Army for civil works, an appointee of President Trump who is the civilian in charge of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In the letter, they call on James to explain the decision to not fund the project, which was approved by Congress in 2018.
“We strongly believe this wrongheaded decision should be reconsidered and reversed with all due speed,” the letter said. https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/2020/02/26/schumer-gillibrand-engel-slam-trump-defunding-mamaroneck-flood-project/4879872002/
